Paintings 2007:  The Swerve series

The sixth series, a group of ten square canvases under the collective title Swerve, stems from the Octavian side of the previous collection. Here I have proceeded in an immediately recognizable way from the curious intersection between the action/gesture statements of Franz Kline and Robert Motherwell, on the one hand, and some of the more restless color fields of Gottlieb and early Guston, on the other.  My personal reference point, however, was the problematic but often seductive personality of my late father, Dwaine Marvick, who, though no artist, communicated a powerful sense of style which influences me to this day.
